Transmission
Manual
I have an 84 ranger with a mazda manual 5 speed and it is making a rattle sound. The sound is some what dull and it sounds like im pulling a heavy chain over the side of an aluminum skiff or over the edge of a piece of metal. It does it when i start to drive through all gears. It doesn't do that when i have the clutch in or in neutral with the clutch out (i think?). the trans was about a centimeter low on fluid but the other stuff was fine. my dad and i are thinking it is ether a u joint, something loose in the tranny, or the pilot bearing, or clutch something. Help please i don't have any way to get around to school and i get off early and before the busses.

unless the transmission was swapped at some point, you dont have a mazda transmission.

it sounds to me like your transmission is junk. u-joints usually produce a clunk during accel. or when going from power to coast. does the sound change at all depending on gear or speed? does it sound different between light and heavy acceleration? id start looking for a junkyard replacement...and you might as well throw in a new clutch (and slave) while your at it.

and FYI, your transfer case is a BW 1350.

the sound is really hard to hear but it does get faster with acceleration. The t case is a 1350. and the transmission is a Toyo Koygo 5-Speed plus it has a pretty new clutch with only like 30,000 miles on it. plues it shifts and everything just fine. it also just started doing this yesterday so maybe there is a chance to save it.

i dont know why i didnt think of this before...but it sounds like a loose pressure plate. pressing on the clutch forces everything against the flywheel, thus it doesnt make noise while the clutch is in.

FYI, there is an inspection port in the bellhousing of the trans that allows you to peak in there...but i dont know what you'll be able to determine from visual inspection.

Damn... I'm having the same kind of sound coming from my tranny right now...

I was thinking it was a combination of the throwout bearing going out as well as my input shaft bearing getting worn out. I've had this noise for the past few weeks.

Great... Now I'm paranoid about it.

Btw, I just realized how old this thread is... but it helped me, so that's all I have to say.
