Ranger won't start

I had to jump my '92 Ranger 4.0l automatic this morning. Then after driving it for a while it wouldn't start. Bought a new battery because the old one was 8 yrs old. Installed the new battery but it still won't turn over the engine. Would that be a bad relay switch not sending juice to the starter? It makes a single click you turn the ignition. All the wires look good, I don't see any signs of wear or rust.

I don't want to just buy a new remaned starter and find out it was something else.

Any ideas...?

Thanks!!!

negative battery cable tight?i know its a stupid thing but it happens all the time

Yes, thanks. I just don't want to buy a new starter if there is something else to check. I'm going to replace the starter relay tomorrow and see if she turns over then. If not, I guess I'll have to fork over $120 for a remaned starter.

Is the starter hard to replace on a 92 Ranger 4.0L automatic?

mine did same thing, boght a new battery - wasn't it, starter - wasn't it, selenoid - wasn't it.....turns out it was a bad positive cable and mine looked fine

.

yeh, cables and connections.
to test them you need a chaep meter. set it on 12v dc and remove one cable only at a time. look for 12 v between them. if nothing you probly have a corroded cable. ground straps are important too.

Thanks guys! All the cables checked out. It turned out to be the starter.

Thanks for all the help!!!

This is an older thread but I have the same symptoms. To test the cables do you put the meter across the connected terminal and the opposite battery terminal?
