so my and my buddy have 01 and 98 4wd auto trans rangers. his 4.0 went and my transmission let go within weeks of each other. we used car-part.com and the hollander interchange to find exact swap replacement ones. the thing is his new engine and my transmission came from EXPLORERS not rangers like we have.. his from a 98 2wd exploder 4.0 vin x and mine from a 01 2 door 4wd explorer 5r55e. the thing we have noticed is the "new" used parts make our trucks totally different and better in our opinions. mine i bought new and later added the new transmission at 134k miles and it will break the tires loose on dry pavement from a standing start if i stomp on it. and its a 4x4. his has the new engine and has more power than it ever had with the original factory motor and he bought his truck new too.

my question and im around trs daily and ive never heard of it being brought up but whats the deal? did ford gear and tune the identical parts differently based on wether or not they were going in a ranger or explorer? it seems like the explorer would be different vs a ranger to compensate for the weight of an explorer and keep their performance about the same.

It is all in your head. The engines and transmissions are the same. You more than likely don't remember them when they were new since you have had them over 100,000+.

there is no difference. Even if it's in the tune of the computer you replaced then engine, not the comp.

nope

this isnt a butt dyno thing, it aint in my head we though that and investigated. todds truck ran the dyno at 235 horses at 3800 rpm at the rear wheels. ill post the printout when i get a copy of it. thats way over stock for a ranger and the motor is stock from the explorer but we went through it and refreshed the rings bearings and gaskets before we installed it. i cant see any mods that have been done to it unless they did a really good job

It's way over stock for a Ranger or an Explorer. They get the same engine. If it's dyno output is that high, either the dyno is wrong or major work has been done under the skin.

Agreed.

im gonna take a look at his again somethings not right with it being that high over stock unless the dual exaust and a kn makes that much of a difference but it would be more like 15 horses not almost 50. one of the downsides of used motors you dont know what you are getting exactly because somebody else has messed with it. mine i figured out. shift kit its gotta be. i can see where the valve body has been tinkered with.. its fun to turn em over like that but might kill my tires and they are getting pricy...:bawling:
