I am converting my 1994 Ranger to a 5.0 V8 that I pulled from a 1987 Crown Vic. I have the original stock heads that came on this Vic, and I have a set of original 289 heads. Which would be best for use with a 7.5 aluminum high rise from Parker (Funnelweb) and a Holly 650 carb?

Use the 289 heads. It's very likely that the CV heads are E6SE's and they suck. What is the casting # on the 289 heads. Look for C9OE or D0OE heads as they have smaller combustion chambers. A little work with a die grinder and you can make these heads flow very well. As for a high rise single plane intake, I'd recommend a mid rise dual plane intake if you're running on the street. 600 cfm is plenty for a 302 so you should be ok on that count.

Big waste of time putting that intake and carb on the 87 Vic 5.0. It's got a roller cam, but it's the smallest of the production cams. And the pistons don't have valve reliefs to swap heads and cams. Rebuild the Vic motor with flat topped pistons with reliefs and a 1.609 (or as close to that as possible)pin or compression height. Then swap cams and heads. As it is, you'll be dissappointed in the performance, even less so with that intake and carb. I used an 88 Vic motor as my first swap candidate, the 1/4 mile times were in the 16's, and that was with it topped with a Performer RPM, Holley 650 and 1.7 rockers The 289 heads to use are the C6OE's with the 54 cc chambers. The D0OE heads to look for are the ones with "351" cast in the rocker valley. They also have 8 intake bolts per side with "L" shaped coolant ports. These are the ones with bigger valves and ports. There are 302 heads with this casting number that have the 302 sized valves.

Hood Clearance

That intake is very tall and wont fit most cars so you may want to check your hood clearance. If you want to use old Ford Heads you may want to pick up a set of Dove 1970 351W heads . They are selling on Ebay for about $75.00 plus freight. I like the 289 heads and they will give you more compression but the 351W will flow better. Its all a matter of preference. If you want another set of the 66 289 Closed Chamber heads, I have plenty of Bare at $50.00/ Set.

Thanks for the info. You guys are the experts and I'm glad that I came to this site.

I bought this intake and carb with the idea of upgrading the heads, cam, pistons, etc later on. But in the meantime, I would like to replace the rockers, but I am not sure what to use given the stock pistons and cam.

You are right about the hood clearance. Very tight, but I got it to work using an after- market air filter. Thanks for the info.

I am working on my second V8 Ranger. The first was a 1992 Standard Cab, previously a 4 cylinder, 5 speed that I installed a 5.0 H.O. with AOD transmission. It would absolutely slam you back into the seat! I can't wait to get the 1994 Supercab I'm working on now going.

Mine should have fired up tonight, instead I'm chasing a wiring gremlin..... Tomorrow maybe?

Apparently I have the (allegedly) crummy E6 heads, I'll try and remember to let you know how they do for me.

Hope you get the wiring nailed down, Dishtowel. As for the E6 heads I was extremely disappointed with them. The grunt was good down low, but it really ran out of steam up high in the revs. The E7's that I ported out and that I'm now running really woke up my motor. There seems to be almost endless power up top. I used a set that were originally on a 351W and bushed the bolt holes. I never really realized that the valves were different E7 to E7. Thanks for that tidbit, Baddad.

Valves different ? Where'd I say that ? The E7's I'm running are off a 351W too and the valves are the same as the 5.0's. Only reason I used these was they were the first set I ran across in the J'yard.

My wiring gremlin turned out to be a bad coil. I robbed the coil of the 2.9 and VROOOOM !!! I creamed my pants. I am so excited to drive this thing, I'm betting I can pop-A-wheely off curbs and logs with the greatest of ease!
Idk who owned this car before I got it. The tranny was cooked past being useful, the coil was bad, the fireing order was garbled, there was solids in the oil. This car was a mess. But all those things are cured now!

I appreciate your feedback on the E6 heads, as I said eirlier, I will be using torque more than I will be using horsepower (if that makes anysense). Where as you, being 2wd and a street machine, want your horsepower, correct? Of course I would put the E7's on if I had them, but I feel A-OK useing the E6's for now.
Maybea, one day down a yellow brick road when I put a stroker kit in I will track down some E7 heads.

Also, what are you talking about with "and bushed the bolt holes" ?? I dont understand what your saying....

351W use bigger head bolts. To use them on a 302 you have to use some sort of bushing or get special head bolts.
