Ranger takes a dump while at Recycling Center. I'm Tempted.

While idling in line for 20 minutes at the recycling center, wife calls, she's going to the doctor immediately, heart's jumping and BP thru the roof.

You're not allowed to get out of the car at the recycling center. So of course, the old guy in the Crown Vic in front of me has to get out and fidget in the trunk while hazmat guys are throwing out all his urine bottles.

So I push his car outta my way and the Ranger blows like Old Faithful. Sweet steam everywhere.

Figures.

I'm debating leaving it for the recycling guys to process or trying to make it to the hospital. So I tempt fate. While watching the dials, I mistook the darn oil pressure gauge for the temp gauge since the needle covered the symbol. "Temp" looked middle range for mile until I discovered the real "Temp" gauge was on "H".

Stopped at a gas station and could NOT find the leak. Green water everywhere around the coolant bottle. No leaks. I let her cool off and filled the recovery tank with a gallon of Evian from the station and sped off.

Eventually I get her home, needle normal all the way home on the expressway. So I let her idle till she got hot. Got my trusty IR Temp Meter Gun and shot some readings. At 228F measured at the driver side water pump outlet (inlet?) hose, the recovery tank suddenly welled up and BLEW water out of the radiator cap. Just like a capped fountain.

Electric fan NEVER came on. The recovery cap may have a pressure issue. At least it let the coolant out.

So, at what temp is the electric fan supposed to go on and off?

And where is the thermal switch located on an 2002?

Well, not sure what temp exactly the fan is supposed to turn on, but on my Tempo the fan relay went out quite often and caused the fan to shut down. I overheated that car about three times due to that cheap relay switch and blew the plastic plug out of the bottom of the rad more than once...

So...I'd say check the relay...they aren't expensive, but their failure can lead to some major repairs...

From the sounds of it, you have a closed coolant system (one where the coolant res is pressurized also). And the electric fan doesn't seem to be working.

For starters, check the e-fan to see if the motor is bad. Just apply 12v to the e-fan connectors. Also check the ratio of the coolant.

ya i had the same problem at my local dump, when i first bought my truck it was winter so i never really notice if the e fan come on or not, well when i was sitting inline at the dump i see my temp gauge skyrocket, so i did everything i could to help cool the truck down an when i finally got to the unloading place it blew anitfreze everywhere so i filled her up with what ever water i had in the truck an drove her home. but turn out the thermostat was bad on the truck but i replaced it an just put my efan on a switch so i can turn it on an off whenever.

If you have AC and the fan relay craps out what I have done before is turned the AC on and it kicks on the electric fan. This will keep it from overheating while in town or at a stop until you get moving. Some fans also kick on when you use the defroster.

It should because it turns on the compressor... I know with my Camaro (e-fan) anytime the compressor is engaged one fan is on, and when it gets to 200 F it shuts off the compressor and turns both fans on high...

ford does crazy things

on my nissan if anything malfunctions with the heating system, the fans default to turn on. this way your car wont overheat. too bad ford didnt set the coolin system up to turn fans on when something malfunctions

Yeah, hows your wife? If I'm going to the hospital I hope my wife isn't posting on the boards about her car. I hope she's in a cab.

you pushed the car with the truck, did i catch that right

That is how the stock fan is, if it gets hot it locks on, if the clutch has a problem, it almost always locks on.

Electric fans do whatever the installer set them up to do. Ford had nothing to do with a E-fan on a Ranger, they never came with them (until recently for the a/c compressor, but it still has a mechanical fan for the main cooling system)

what i would do id ditch that eletrical bullshit ford put in there and put a mechanacal fan in and have less problems with everything and maybe a new cap while i was at it..
