Ranger smokes yet another tranny.

This is the 2nd tranny this dang ranger has eaten. First one...not its fault. Brother ran it for 6 months with no fluid. I put another one in and made sure fluid level was always full. Going down the freeway...boom. No transmission. Is there any other 5-speed that can bolt up to a 2.3? Or am I stuck with the M5R1?

Gonna be easier to find another MO5D, but search around. Car-parts.com is a good locater.

do y'all mean M5OD? i've honestly never seen one of these trannys fail yet. knock on wood. your not speed shifting are you? my O/D sheared off but thats because the guy i bought it from didn't use the clutch. i bought it like that and fixed it.

No I always use my clutch. And that transmission is refered to as a couple different names such as the M50d and M5R1 and M50D-R1 and a few others...all the same tranny. For fluid I use synthetic auto tranny fluid. I did, however, put a quart of 20w-50 in it about 8 or 9 months ago because she got a little low and thats all I had to throw in it. I took it in a little later and had it emptied and filled back with the synthetic. The tranny whinned like a beast when I got it as did the original one in every gear except for 4th. Someone said it was a main shaft bearing going out but I dont know. I do know that in less then 3 years...it has went through 2 transmissions. Even though the first one wasn't its fault.
