ranger refit/build thread

Glad you made a build thread, gwaii! I was hoping one would pop up at some point, I love your truck, and your ingenuity. Can't wait to see more, and the refit with a 60!

i knew that just doing this thread was going to take a fair bit of time, that's why i'd been putting it off for so long.there are some significant gaps in the photographic record, with an even bigger one coming up.
theres about a two year period before i moved to the islands when i switched to digital cameras and loaded the pics on my computer.that computer was brought up with me,but was used by my stepdaughter for a while.when i got it back,it was not working-i had it checked and the hard drive had been cleared.
i still have the hard drive,as i understand the info should still be hidden on there somewhere, just need to figure out how to get it back.
thank god for old tech paper photos....if it weren't for those,i would have nothing.

Recovery depends on if it has been rewritten over the old data.. The more it has been used the less likley you are of a good recovery. There is software that you can buy to help recover just make sure you slave the drive to be recovered to a working PC.

this is one part i need to find out how to do-i have a working pc that i plugged it into, but it froze the pc.i heard that there is something else i need to do to make the pc recognise the hard drive, can anyone walk me through this?i'd really like to find out if it is even possible to get those files back...i have the recovery software in my new computer.

On the Hard drive you should see a set of pins similar to this ::::. Then there also should be a key that tells you where to put the jumper.. For the HD in your PC it should be set to Master. The one you want to recover should be set to Slave.. Assuming your PC uses IDE conections for the HDs. Oh yeah jumper setting differ from HD to HD so you'll need to check the key on both.
The key choices are DS Master CS Enabled DS Slave.. Hope that helps...

helped big time-found the jumper and the key-still have to try it,but i'm heading in the right direction.

thank you,sir!

What you did with the 9" blows my mind!
This has to be the most interesting thread on this site.

thank's,man.

well,so far the hard drive recovery isn't going so well.....

so i'll go with what ive got.
at this point i was taking the thing out to climb over anything i could find...like this rock.

it was working good, the engine was fantastic-smooth,had a good rumble running just the cats, pretty economical with the fuel, and passed emmisions testing with the best numbers i'd ever seen.
but there was still work to do.

wow you made that rock your bitch!

looking good man! love to see how this beast morphed into what it is today.

i was still doing the ramp thing, and this pointed out one issue.

refit002_crop-2.jpg

the tied together front worked well to improve flex, but there was a problem keeping springs in,as the diff was able to drop out further that the springs would go.there were several trucks on the circiut with this problem,to the point that the officials made a rule that any truck having a spring get loose would be disqualified.it was a good rule.

so i moved the springs inboard of the frame, with no engine there,i had plenty of room.

the issue i had now was that the front was too loose,as in not a high enough spring rate.another thing that was causing problems was the radius arms.since with one going up and the other going down it twisted the front end so much,i had the alignment going out all the time.this got rather annoying.

so back into the shop it goes...

refit003_crop-2.jpg

i pulled the radius arms together, welded a pivot on the junction, and solved my alignment issues.

of course,it needed something to pivot on.so i made this crossmember from 1/4" steel, massive and fully boxed as it would take all the fore and aft loads on the front end.

it also helped stiffen the frame.

years ago, i think when you just put the big block in and doing the ramp thing, it was jokingly asked aloud if we were separated at birth, while discussing why someone would use a ranger with such innovations.

though i was looking at a cassale and 427 at the time.

after reading to this point...i am wondering if its true.

back then, and even to this day....if it has a straight axle, its a jeep and not a ranger was my opine. even know it was modded solid i still chalked it up to ttb :)

i've always been a big fan of ttb,and really understand it's potential more than most....but when extreme articulation comes into play, you find it's limits.as much as i like what is in there,it will be replaced with a d60.

i hope you are not too dissapointed.
but there will be a long travel ttb beach racer in my future....just don't tell anyone.it's a secret.

as for this thing, while i was at the frame,i added some tubes from the cage down to the front of the frame,

refit005_crop-2.jpg

this helped stiffen it up substantially,as now the cage spanned from the very front of the frame to the rear.

and bobby w,i appreciate that you even remember me from then...5 years is a long time-it was good to see some of the familliar names when i came back.

and while i was cruising a number of sites back then, these days this is the only one i allow myself.
