I am working on my 1985 Ranger 4X4 the rear end has a lot of play at the drive shaft I am putting new gear oil in it looking at the gears they look fine but I dont know what the code on the tag means dont want to put the wrong oil in it need help the code is SL 73 any help please

standard ford gear oil and friction modifier. but if you have play in the shaft, you've got bigger problems then what oil to use. Sounds like you need to replace the pinion bearings. this involves normally having to setup the gears again. great time to change ratio if you want.

If you have play in the DRIVESHAFT, check your u-joints :dunno:

if the drive shaft just has a lot of dead space, IE turns about 1/8th of a turn but doesn't have any up/down or side to side movement then that's probably normal, meaning your limited slip clutches are getting warn out.
