Ranger/Mustang Gears

Are Ranger ring/pinion interchangeable with Mustang 9 inch gears...?
 
The 8.8 gears that mustangs use are the same that rangers with an 8.8 use. As long as both are 8.8 youre fine. Not quite sure what you mean by 9"
 
As a sen~or citizen, I, and my car-jockey friends, always referred to the 8.8 gears as 9 inch....as a generic term. Hope that 0.2 inch hasn't offended anyone.
 
Well, there is quite a difference between an 8.8 and a 9 inch as far as rears go.

Not offended so much as confused.

Since you are an old car guy I'll give you a point of reference that might mean a bit more.

302 small block is like the 9" rear.

The 300-6 is like the 8.8.

The difference in size is negligable, but if you round up when asking about parts you might end up with something very very wrong.
 
I have a 97 Mustang GT w/8.8 rear end and a limited slip. I have the same 8.8 w/limited slip in my ranger though it has drum brakes. Both are 28 spline axles and The carrier can be interchanged.
A 9" rear end is a whole different animal. Hope this helps.

No big deal. I just wanted to make sure you didnt mean the 9" rearends. As far as the 8.8 gears though i bought mine from a mustang website. They are all the same axle.

As far as the R&P goes yes, there are differences elsewhere in the axle and depending on which model of Ranger they can be very extensive.

Yeah I guess I should have clarified on that haha.
 
ABS makes a difference between carriers...I deleted the ABS in my Ranger by putting a mustang l/s in it, gears are gears though as has been said.
 
Is this between 28 and 31 spline axles too, since the gears aren't splined? I haven't seen anything for either count, just for a 8.8".
 
Ya gears are the same between the 28 spline and 31 spline, everything else is different though.
 
Thank you all for straightening me out re: 8.8 vs 9 inch rear ends. I was totally unaware that Ford had 9 inch rears in Mustangs and Rangers(?). My Mustang is a 1995 GT. Have had 3 different ratios in the rear....they all must've been 8.8......never measured them. Was thinking of swapping the 3.73 now in the Ranger with the 3.27 once in the Mustang...I know there'll be some consternation with some forum members; the Ranger is 4X2 limited slip, 3L., automatic, and not used for heavy hauling or off-road; I'd like a lil' better mileage...not caring if it's a lil' sluggish....hope that's not heresy to all the Ranger motor heads out there...LOL.

Charlie, you do see the light! Rangers never did come with the 9" rear and Mustangs haven't used them stock in maybe 30+ years. Still a sought for rear if looking for strength.

Edit: forgot to mention about changing the rear ratio to 3.27. Really not a good idea with the 3.0, you can end up with poorer mileage. You might drop it out of the best rpm for efficency. What are you getting now for mileage?
