How do I tell if I have a D35 front diff in my '03 Ranger EDGE ?

You only need to answer one question to tell if there is D-35 front axle in the front of any IFS Ranger.

1) Is there a factory front diff present?

If you answered yes, it's a Dana 35.

If you answered no, you are barking up the wrong tree.

Ok so where does the tag and the stamped D27A come in ?

I called Randy's Ring and Pinion asked for all that is needed for the re-gear and the sales rep didn't know, he needed to know the axle size, all the tag readings, reverse or regular cut gears... why did I call them ?

It's part of the part number. It does not denote the axle model.

There is your first problem. Sales reps know nothing about anything except ringing up a sale.

Yeah, he probably thinks that you just want to replace worn out factory gears. If you want to change the ratios then most of the info on those tags is going to be worthless.

why did I call them ?

Beats me.

Thanks but to keep it straight in my mind is there anyway to determine the actual axle, is there a cast in number, are these diff reverse cut gearing ?

thanks a lot for the info.

Except for pre-1990 (a few made it past that, but not many), the Ranger's front diff is a Dana 35. Period.

TTB Axles had a high pinion (or reverse cut, which is a bit of a misnomer, but that's a different discussion), IFS trucks had a low pinion, standard gear.

Really though, that information is plastered ALL over the site. You should have come across it through a search.

I may be wrong in this, but I was under the understanding that specifically the "EDGE" model was a 2wd truck with 4x4 stance? (4x4 suspension without the diff and axle shafts)

Really, I would have thought you would have seen the EDGE info all over the site... they come in either 2 or 4X... lol

Mine is an EDGE and it is a 4x.

Thanks for the input but my problem was, but not stated, " there is a tag on the diff that has stamped numbers "D27A"... that said I was confused on it.

Ltr

Yeah, you're right. But I also never bothered to search :D

This is the question you asked though, and I still maintain that kind of information is all over the site. Particularly in the Tech Library.

I will look around.
Thanks for taking the time.

The factory fit differential 1998 and up is a standard rotation D35. There is no other option. Dont sweat it you have a standard rotation D35.
