Hey guys Im fixing my neighbors ranger for them the spiders are shot.My question is when I try to pull the pin out of the carrier it wont go past the ring gear?I see the pin is machined flat half way so I guess that means it only goes that far?Do I have to remove the axles and then the whole carrier to replace the side and spider gears?Or can it be done with the pin hangin half way out? What a crappy design I cant beleive it I just want to do this the easiest way any help would be great thanks.

Which axle are you working on? Is it a c-clip or retainer style?

Front or rear?

Sounds like a 7.5" rear.

Unfortunately on that axle the carrier does have to come out and the ring gear taken off to get the spiders out. Just make sure you don't mix up any of the carrier shims when you pull it out (they're on the outside of the carrier bearings)

could he not notch a tooth on the ring gear maybe? vs taking out the carrier etc

I don't believe the spider gears will come out past the ring gear, but maybe I'm wrong (AllanD would know this one, I haven't dealt with a 7.5" yet myself).

Ok thanks guys I have done many gear swaps and spool installs(im a drag racer)but have never seen this before I cant believe the pin only comes half way out!!!so I pulled the axles and the carrier and you are right on the money the ring gear must come off to get the pin out then clear sailing....rediculous!!!My next question is are the ring gear bolts left hand thread??Does anyone know the ring gear bolt torque or the diff caps torque? Thanks again for the advice its nice to get advice like this when your stumped thanks!!!!

take a dremel to the offending gear tooth (whichever side requires less grinding), this can be done without issue, which is what I did when I killed a spider gear on my 7.5 with 4.10's... have been driving and abusing the axle for over 3 years since I did this, now with near 200hp, this is most likely what AllanD would say to do as I've seen him say it a few times

Torque specs are on this page.

RG bolts are standard RH threaded.
