Ranger died yesterday!

First fu'kin' day I got emmisions plates, and everyting. I go to get gas at a Sinclair gas station I was on empty, and I was filling it up while it was idling, and when I went to leave it just died. I tried to start it, and it started for a second and died, and did this for a few seconds. Now when I turn it over there is nothin' I'm pretty sure the problem is it's not getting fuel. But this is so dam wierd it just died. So what could the problem be. A fuel pump, fuel pump regulator, fule filter, what? I had to have one of my freinds tow me in his Yota, that was embarasing.

Get any rain lately? A local gas staton had a plug not seal right for the big tank, and a 4" rain put 300+ gallons of water in the underground gas tank. Whoever got gas there was lucky to leave the lot, nobody got out of town. They all needed fuel filters, a new Toyota owner was feeling good because she got the farthest away. The filter and pump are one unit on those, and it took out 2 injectors along with the $400 pump. The gas station footed the bill, it might be worth looking into.

Also I don't think you are supposed to leave it running while refilling it.

well first check to see if you have any fuel pressure after trying to start it. After that check to see if you got spark. If then still nothing check your compression.

I agree check your fuel pressure and spark first. Check the simplest and least expensive things first. Check if you hear the fuel pump relay charge, or the fuel pump when to turn the key to run(should hear a hum). Maybe take the filter off and see if its clogged. Could also be a Mass Air Flow Sensor. My buds car did this. It would start and die like after 3 seconds of sputtering, then a smell of gas. Let us know how it goes. Good Luck.

There's so many things that can go wrong. The first step should be to pull any codes if you can get them.

I pulled off the bed. Tested the fuel pump put a hot wire on it and it ran. Then of all things in the distrubition box the 20 amp little fuse was blown. Put a new on in, it started and ran then died. The fuse blew again. So there is a bare wiire somwhere grounding it out. I don't know how to find it. This could take days.

You need to look over the wiring from the distribution box all the way to the tank. Shorts don't develop for no reason. The wiring has to be pinched between two things. Or melted on to the exhaust. You might try disconnecting the pump, replace the fuse and cycle the key to see if the fuse is still blowing.

When I put on my lift and torched off the front cross member and I roasted some wires. My brake lights and turn signals wouldn't work. Had to have my buddies dad fix 'em. He said something that there were 3 wires he didn't fix, so I'm bringing it back to him. I don't get it though. It ran fine for a day after he fixed it then it went out. Was a wire about to break, and then did after driving it?

Sounds like it. Grounded out or broke. Just make sure they aren't getting pinched by anything after they are fixed and tuck them up out of the way of harm.

I realize this is an old thread, but I wanted to add my two cents. I had n issue with fuel delivery in my 95 ranger and after replacing the fuel filter and pump and bypassing the fuel pump cutoff, I discovered that it was a frayed wire just under the distribution box. I spliced it and the truck ran fine.
It took about two days to hunt it down, though.
