ranger custom 1992 4x4 problem

hi. i just bought a ranger with the v6 2.9 engine, 5 speed manual trans. the 4x4 doesn't engaged and somebody said that i needed to change a '' o-ring'' or a cutter pin on the left front side of the truck . he said that piece cost about a hundred bucks but i think it is too expensive for just a o-ring. anybody knows something about that?

need to know a couple of things to help with this question

1. electric or manual t-case
2. auto or manual hubs

and do you know if the transfer case is engaging try putting it into 4x4 and turn the front drive shaft by hand if it turns in 4hi or 4lo there is a problem in the case or shifter. dont tear into the front end when there are simpler things to be checked or possibly fixed.
