Browsing awhile back I happened onto this one... kind of a spin on a teardrop style camper. With my pop up canopy... I think two people could be rather comfy road tripping.

Also the fact when you get to your destination... set it up and the truck is free to move around without the camper.

The wife has fond memories of camping in a pop up... she really wants one of those. This seems to bridge the gap almost enough... there could be something along these lines in our future.

I've seen one called an A Liner at the RV shows. They're pop-ups but hard sided and you can get A/C. I'm happy in my tent unless it's super hot or raining.

Nature of the beast that carries it. Narrower bed, narrower floor. The ones for the original rangers would be even more narrow. They did make great use of the available space.

I'm not so sure about that... I owned the one @85_Ranger4x4 has now for many years. I will say the door in the Skamper was definitely shorter... but it has a pop top.

I don't have a good picture out the back from the inside but the door on the Skamper is a little on the narrow side. I have to twist sideways to get thru it. Probably similar to the above camper trailer. Looking at the picture I figure the structure for the wall limits the drivers side obviously and the bench/bed probably limits the passenger side.





That said I think they used about the same door on the fullsize models (because reasons or because cheap?)

It seems later on they realized the whole camper doesn't have to pass thru the wheel wells and thus they can widen the rear structure and make the door bigger (these are newer FWC's which also have aluminum frames)

I’m amazed they have such short doors. We had a Starcraft pop-up camper. The door on it was in two pieces. The upper half was on a frame that folded down from the roof when you opened everything up. Seems these could have the same thing.

There is probably a reason, I don't know why. There is framework that moves around in there that probably limits it at least on my Skamper and I don't know how the newer ones compare. I haven't seen a two piece door on a slide in yet (haven't really been looking for one either) It could be structural too and they like having something run across the top at the back as there are torsion springs and other magic at the back to help raise the roof.

They do have a pad above the door on your way out.

It isn't such a big deal because you are going up as you go in/down as you go out too, it isn't a straight shot like a low slung popup trailer. The tailgate on my F-150 is kind of a kerfuffle, you have to go out a bit before you can go down and that is a bigger deal than it has any right to be.

Floor plan is different from the door. The door is tight with the slide in they showed above compared the Scamper. While the door is shorter, it's wider. I think they didn't want to have too much of a rear over hang but needed a way to get in the slide in and still have the bathroom. The floor itself should be a little wider than what the Scamper has due to the width between the wheel wells being wider. It just seems tighter because it isn't a straight shot in.

The point about not needing clearance aft the of wheel wells, I think is a good one. It might be a cost of materials and labor thing. It might also be that the wheel wells in one truck aren't going to sit in the same spot as they will for another. In any case, that would open up the back a little more for things if they filled in the gap behind the wheel wells.
