ranger 4x4 gear change

im thinking about changing my gears in my 04 ranger from 4.10 to 4.56 i was thinking about buying a front axle from the junk yard and putting the new gears in it so i could just swap it out with out my truck being down for too long. I was wondering if the gears would fit and were can i find gears for the front and what axle my truck has in the front? The truck is my dd and is it a good idea?

They make up to 4.88 for our D30/35 hybrid axle up front. I have Yukon 4.88's up front. www.completeoffroad.com is the cheapest place I've found gears, and that's where I got mine from. You should have a professional do the Ring and Pinion set-up.

I did exactly what you are thinking of doing....I got a used 30k Sport Trac D35 for $100. I opted to upgrade the rear axle to a 31spline Ranger axle from an Fx4 w/ 38k. Both axles were dropped off at my gear guy's place. Had my Yukon gears installed for a total of $300 labor.

What size tire are you running to make you want to put in 4.56 gears??? 33's? 35's? My '01 is a daily driver w/ 4.88's and 35's. It's perfect and is performing at or just less than stock in the mileage department. Drivability all around is AWESOME.

its got 33s onit now and only a 3.0 its a dog

For 33s with a 3.0 you may want 4.88s for just a little more oomph.

Yeah, 4.88s should wake that 3.0L up nicely with 33" tires. 4.56 isn't really enough for it.
