What are the basic differences between the low to high model range Rangers from 2001 to 2006? I'm sure the mechanicals are the same, save for LSDs and gear ratios. But what other major differences are there?

I'm looking into the Ranger for my next work truck. I'm planning on a service body, modified F/R suspension, larger tires, larger brakes if available. I'm thinking of a truck along the lines of a prerunner with a service body.

That's a lot to ask.

FWIW, the 4.0 V6 makes the best power, the 3.0 V6 is durable but ~ same mpg as 4.0, the 2.3 I4 is good on gas, almost as much HP/Tq as the 3.0, but you can't get a 2.3 in a 4wd.

Level II has the 31 spline 8.8 w/ Torsen LS and a manual transfer case. All the rest are typically 8.8 open, w/ electric transfer cases. Off Road package got 4.10's, (L/S if you ordered it that way). A lot of guys put Explorer axles underneath and gain rear discs, but you have to reweld perches.

If you are going service bed (= heavier truck), I'd go with the 4.0, automatic tranny (higher GVWR) with LS rear. Gear ratio I can't really comment on without knowing where you drive.

You can get different grade torsion bars for the front, making it as stiff as you like. Everything newer than 2001 gets live axle front so no hublocks to worry about.
A lot of guys throw Chevy leafs in the back, some use James Duff traction bars to cure axle wrap.

Trim levels vary a lot.

My idea did not start with this truck, but it's a good example of what I'd like to build. I figured on the newer model for the independent front suspension, possibly swap to a Dixon Bros. kit, 33's or 35's, definitely 5-speed, 4.56 gears.

My driving is a mix of highway/residential street/dirt haul roads on grading jobs. Lately, I've been putting about 25K/year on my Raider, and my job needs necessitate a slightly larger truck. If I'm not $$ able to go with a Ranger, I'm going to purchase my buddies 87 K30 diesel service body. I'm weighing my options.
