All,

I appologize for the most probably repost of a topic. So please forgive. I'm dealing with my '02 Ranger 4x4 that is setting both the P0171 and P0174 codes. There is a lot of talk about the cause. I've just topped 100K on the 4.0L. Some talk is the MAF. I took out and sprayed it down with MAF cleaner, let it dry and reset the computer. I can go about 20 miles with no re-trip of the codes. Shut it down.. and then restart and go about 3 miles and boom.. trip the codes again. I'm not in a big hurry to replace the MAF as it is a bit spendy. There are also talk of a possible vac leak to the throttle body? Not sure where to look for that? Also talk of fuel filter causing this as well? I don't remember when last the fuel filter was changed but at last oil changed my wrenches did ask about when that was done last? I really want to take a good run at fixing this without donating my kids to Ford LOL. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Todd

4.0L SOHC correct?

This is usually caused by a cracked/deteriorated PVC elbow. Find the PCV valve on the back of the drivers side valve cover and follow the hose/tube that goes around the back of the intake and then up the passenger side valve cover. When it turns towards the throttle body there is a rubber elbow, it is usually collapsed/cracked.

Lets just say I've run across this a few times....heh

Glad you found it!

Until tomorrow when I can get the hose 10 bux. I pulled it off and 50 mi/hr taped it up and put it back on. Cleared the codes and noticed idle came back online where it should be. No bumps. Well I am thinking this got it done. Guess I gave Shell a few gallons since the computer was dumping fuel... sheesh.. Thank's a lot. I'll report tomorrow once I run it awhile and the codes don't trip again. Todd

PS. Ford doesn't just give up the elbow hose. Have to buy the tube assembly. 32.00. Done
