I just got a 1996 ranger with the 4.0 manual trans and 2wd. Extended cab flat black paint. No rust witch is rare for a 17 year old truck here in maine .runs good. Ps pump is wicked loud steers easy though. and needs an exhaust donut gasket. What should i look out for on this engine with this amount of miles? would you recommend any oil additives in this engine? anything that will quiet down the ps pump? Also how many miles are possible on this engine?

Hello to a fellow Down-Eastah! I'm in TN now but I was born in Bangor and still have relatives up around Caribou and Presque Isle I think.

Congrats on your "new" Ranger, and welcome to TRS! Rust free in Maine?!?! Freaky...

With 242k on the odometer you're just a little past the break in period :) I have 231k on my 1998 and still running strong. Ford PS pumps are notoriously whiny, but a flush and refill should help. Most don't think much about swapping out PS fluid.

There are a few things listed in the Tech Library as well as the V6 4.0 forum that you can watch for on your engine, along with common wear points elsewhere such as leaf spring hangers, shock mounts, etc.

Enjoy the site!

Bring it to my yard with the other 20 or so ranger/ broncos ii /exploders in minot. And I will find it a good home

No kisses? Oh, right, it's flu season...

A 96 is 17 years old? Mine looks younger, but it does have 320,000 Km on the clock...and I think that works out to about $2,000 USd...or about 170,000 miles...
