Rangebe...version 2.0

Got the rest of the lower Drivers ball joint welded in place. Need to finish grinding my welds smooth, and then extend the beam so the axleshaft will fit.

I had to cut out the depression on the back side of the beam, just as with the passengers, and replaced it with a piece of plate from old 50 beam.

Wont be able to work on it until the weekend. managed to blow up my grinder, and use up the last of my MIG gas.

So now that you have to extend one beam and not the other is that going to affect how far either tire sticks out?

The beam is only getting extended by just over an inch, shouldn't even be noticeable. However, before I plate the beams, I am going to mock up the brackets and beams on the truck, and check that everything functions properly and has no bind. At that point ill know if I need to lengthen the other beam, or if I need to relocate the lower bj's for better camber.

You don't actually have to extend the beam at all. There is a thread on here somewhere where a guy used a 44hd axle shaft and just cut it like half an inch. I'll see if I can find it.

What you dont understand is that the 50 axleshafts are bigger, and use a different u joint than the 44hd, which is just a d44 shaft.

Dang I was hopeing to save you a bit of hassle. Are the 50s a different length than the 40s?

Hmmm I guess you would have thought of extending/shortening the 50 shaft already. Good luck! I'm enjoying this build!

Went to get more MIG gas and the place was closed :annoyed: Guess Ill have to go Tuesday during my lunch break.

I did manage to get a new grinder, and ground down the rest of my welds on the drivers beam. Now need to finish burning in a few more welds, and extend the beam.

In the mean time, I finally got around to putting up a shelf in my shop. The 'ornaments' you see on the shelf are all old car parts me and my buddies have collected over the years.

They were the centre-pieces at my wedding :D

Tomorrow Ill be picking up an air compressor, an 80 gallon DeVillbiss industrial that I am getting free from my wife's uncle.

Peace.

Nice score on the compressor! I picked up an older 80 gallon vertical DeVilbiss from work a couple years back, its a beast of a home compressor!

Awesome build! That is going to be quite the front axle. Lots of great information in here.

I saw you qouted from pirate4x4, so you probably saw the TTB jeep build on there. He was building a different type of rig, but he ended up using a dana 50.

Im excited to see how you end up fitting that beast under there. Good luck!

Didnt get any work done on the axle. However, I did get the compressor moved over to my shop from the uncle's. Brendan gave me a hand moving this beast; the compressor weighs 439 pounds. Still need to secure it down and wire it into the panel. Here is a pic in the uncle's garage, moving it. Thank goodness for my engine hoist.
