Has anyone extended the stock radius arms from the f150/bronco when doing there SAS? Here is a pic of mine. The main question is how will the cast radius arms hold up to my welded on extensions? Here is a pic 12" over stock. I still need to put ends on them and most likely going to plate where its conjoined.

Post pics of your home made rudius arms and stock extended ones.

so the the cast steel will not be brittle and break or break loos from the welds?
 
I'm not sure how he did it, but I would preheat both pieces to ~400 degrees and weld it with a Nickel rod. Should work fine, done it many times

i did not preheat i welded with .035 wire. welds turned out awesome but i didnt even think about it being cast until i welded one together.

You got the idea right, but I would have removed the stock shock mounts and ran the tubing all the way to the bushing flange. Mine are gonna look fairly similiar with a small bend for tire clearance....

I was thinking about it but i didn't have enough tubing to go all the way. I also wanted to keep the shock mounts where they were because I plan on using them. So what do you guys think will they hole up or should I just not even waste my time finishing the other one? BTW the tube is extended into the arm 3" and with most likely get plated all the way down to the shock monts and about 6" down the tube.
 
I think you should be ok as long as you can't see a hairline crack in the weld. I've done it both ways before (preheated and not) and if you weld it not heated sometimes as it cools you can see a small crack form. If you can't see one it think you will be ok.

P.S. Have you gotten a chance to pull apart the 8 lug 44 you said you had to get the spindles off I needed? Are you swapping to a 5 lug set up? If so I'd be glad to trad some parts I have lots of 5 lug pieces.

Are they just harden steel? I was thinking cast because when I was cutting out the section for the tube to slide into I bent the piece I cut back and fourth about 5 times and it snapped and looks like cast.
 
Maybe I should've been more specific. They're not cast IRON. Its a toss up whether they're cast STEEL or forged STEEL. Either way they weld up beautifully.

I've wasted about a half hour trying to find a source that proved one way or the other, and failed haha.
 
That would make more sense. I searched Pirate and most of what I saw was saying cast steel. There were a few guys saying forged though. As far as application, they're subject to bending more so than other axle components, but knuckles, housing, and the wedges on some axles are also cast, so IDK.
 
based on there application im almost 100% sure there forged

I'm almost 100% sure they're not forged. Do you know the cost to forge a part, especially compared with a simple casting?


Ford would not have forged those arms, they would have cost far too much due to the volume that would have to be produced, and the required tooling.
