Radiators: what fits?

Does the automatic have a trans cooler built into it? If so, for those of us using a manual transmission - would it be better to grab the 91-94 Explorer 4.0 Radiator that was originally for a manual?

It is only a single core.

Could we (manual transmission persons) use the trans cooler built into the radiator as an engine oil cooler? :icon_idea: I think the lines would be too small and wouldn't flow well enough. On the other hand, it could be potentially used as a power steering cooler if plumbed into the return side?

As far as I know if it isn't a automatic with AC it will be a single core and not big enough for a V8. Probably even close if not the same to what you have now.

You could use the tranny cooler for something else (depending how it flows) but I couldn't use it at all because of where my FEAD was. With the crown vic setup all the pulleys are right in front of the ports. For my engine oil filter adapter they recommended 1/2" hose and fittings so I doubt it would flow enough to be in line with that.

I was thinking the same thing.. I was going to run an external trans cooler which would leave the cooling ports open on the radiator. Not sure of the best possible use but definitely something to think about..... food for thought, put it on the table and kick it around!!:icon_idea:

I did some massive editing to my initial post after doing some more research and didn't even see your reply. Oh well.

Clearance permitting, I will be attempting to use it as a power steering cooler.

I just put plugs in mine, there is only less than a inch between the lower one and the PS pulley... virtually nothing to work with at all. :dunno:

But a shorter FEAD or one that is reconfigured differently might leave it wide open.

The radiator they gave me is only a single core even though I specified the 92 explorer auto with A/C.

I am going to install a crazy ass electric fan or fans and see what happens.. got my doubts if the single core can do it. ... but then again my brother has a ranger with a 5.0L using a CU1722 radiator which is single core and it has no overheating issues.

The fan he is using is a mechanical flex... so i hope I can stay cool.. if not i will just have to get the correct dual core rad.... not sure why the advanced auto guy gave me the single core :icon_confused:

Might as well return it and get what you need, they will probably be more likely to return it now before it is used and no longer a resaleable item. BTW a dual core is about 2" thick, aside from that difference from the single core (1" thick) they pretty much look the same.

I am not 110% for sure how it is going to work this summer, it kinda creeps up to a tad over 200 if I am idling in gear on a 40 degree day... I might try a cooler temp sender for the fan so it doesn't wait until 195 degrees to kick on. If I were to do it over again I would probably hog out the bottom of the core support and move the rad under the core support. It would make servicing everything on the front of the engine vastly easier in addition to probably being a supperior setup.

But that is just my preliminary report after the first day of driving it on the street. :icon_thumby:

cooling is tough to predict, as actual use and where/when its used vary so widely.

for hard use in extreme conditions, you have to clearcut the area out front there in core support land and use at least the equivilant of the explorer radiator. thats about the only thing i can say for sure with rbv v8 swaps.

most guys can use the 4.0 hd radiator though with no issues, even single core 4.0 auto radiators easily cool most street trucks. i have seen k car radiators and fans cool 500 hp rangers with minimal issues. the diesel benz radiators work good too.

with a body lift dodge dakota radiators and jeep radiators were a mainstay in the late 80's to mid 90's.

It is kinda nervewrecking to try to test too... I might just be too jumpy.

So far as long as I keep it moving it stays plenty cool, idling it stays cool enough... but it isn't that warm out yet either.

Teddy that looks like a nice fit, did you get a remote radiator cap for that or is there enough clearance?

Was out of the country...
Fits fine, stock cap...

Again, gross pictures from the initial build:
