I have a 1993 Ranger 4.0 automatic. Why does my radiator only leak until the thermostat opens up? It is like it is forceing the fluid out between the tanks.

Once the t-stat opens, hot coolant is circulating throughout the system - heat expands things and closes up small cracks/leaks.

Does it leak when its just sitting? They've had problems with the tanks leaking on a number of models. The plastic tanks are sealed with an O ring and over time the O ring starts to leak. It usually is conciderabley worse when its cold and goes away when the engine gets hot. I've tried having the tanks resealed but it didn't last long. You have to replace the radiator to truely fix the problem.

Thanks forthe reply .That is exactly whenit is leaking (cold). I guessI will be getting a new radiator.

Mine was leaking when it was cold. Around the tank on pass. side. Just replaced only $110 from advance and it took about 1 hour.
