Just dropped new built 2.9l in , added pace setter headers and i want to complete the package ,got that wierd oval flange at the cats , we dont have emmissions here so i want to put a small muffler and put in place of the cats and replace the other muffler , i want it to be wisper quiet but flow good ..
any thoughts ???

You could make a custom exhaust. Flowmaster or magnaflow have some really good muffler. They have some that is quiet and gives you good performance.

yeah i found a 2.5" round to 2.5" oval adapter to fab the pipe replacing the cats , maybe a dyno max super turbo

Go look at my thread in the exhaust section, ignore the loud ones and check out their quiet ones.

The cats arent hurting flow and help muffle the engine noise. Leave them alone.

i would leave them , they're just 25 years old and about 225$ to replace w/ magnaflow cats
guess if they arent hurting anything i could leave them

Just cut the flange off, flatten one end of a 3" pipe, then reduce it back to 2.5" or 2.25".

... Cat flange made simple.

I did the very thing you're talking about: Pacesetter headers to a Y-pipe. I used the flange for the cats but cut them off. I wanted to leave the muffler in the same place, so I used an old driveshaft that I cut to size for the connector pipe. I'll get some pics up but this was all done before I put a 3" body lift on. I might be able to shoot a video to help with the sound.

The top is the y-pipe with factory flange. The lower is a drive shaft welded to the flange that was attached to the catalytic converters. The drive shaft flows directly into the Dynomax muffler.

This is the backside of the muffler and the exhaust pipe. It is made of an exhaust pipe that we cut into sections and put collars around the pieces to shape it. Didn't have a bender.

Hope this helps. The sound is awesome and I have never driven another 4.0L but it has a ton of power.

Leave the cats alone. Thats what the muffler is there for.

the way exhaust systems quiet an engine is with restriction. you have to choose between quiet or free flowing. small engines, like the 2.9 need back pressure(restriction) to make any torque, the usable power for anything other than wide open throttle. a waste gate will help WOT power, but will probably never open on a stock 2.9. I hope this helps you make the right decision for your application

yeah need all the torque i can get

not real happy with the slip fit instead of ball socket type connectors on the pace setter headers ... i put band clamps on them instead of welding them ... quiet as a new truck , cats intact ...
