I have a very short sqeal when I start my truck after it has been sitting for a long time(over night or all day at work). I checked the belt out and it was replaced less than 30k and shows no cracking or anything. Can a water pump or power stearing pump make a sqeal like this? it only lasts 1/2 a second and then it runs great with no other problems.

Would like to get this fixed. My gf makes fun of me every morning :(

Thanks for the help. Also its the truck in my sig.

Does your truck have an auto tensioner or is it the manual tensioner. If it is the manual tensioner, tighten the belt just a smidgen, and see if that helps, remember, new belts will stretch when they're being worn in. If it is the manual tensioner, pull the belt off the tensioner, and then with whatever tool (ratchet, wrench, belt removal tool, ect) you use to release the tension of the belt, pull the tensioner in the opposite way (as in tightening). If the tensioner moves back quite a fair bit, after the pulley is sitting in the neutral position, then the tension spring is weak and you'll need to replace your tensioner, of if you release the tension and the tensioner wants to stay in place or slowly moves back instead of instantly, then you'll need to replace the tensioner. If the play in the tensioner is good, then I would check the belt for glazing and check to see if all your pulleys are running free with no resistance. If that all turns out good, I'd say you have a belt that is just a tad to long.

Great I will check out my pullys and take off the belt really quick and give it a better inspection.

Thanks for the response!

Start it with the heater / air conditioner control in the OFF position.

I think it is your compressor clutch.

My heater AC always gets turned to Off after I drive, so its in the off position when I start it. Im anal and like to have all the switches pointing straight up. No matter if its 110* out, it the truck is off they all get put back to mid temp, off, and lowest air setting. Weird I know...

And here I thought I was the only one that did this! Everybody looks at me weird when I do this. I just blame it on an OCD tendency.:icon_twisted:
Do you also turn the radio and any other acessories off too?

Starter motor?

My brother's '98 4.0L make a squeal for a ½ second right after the engine catches, to me the noise sounds like the starter spinning down (haven't investigated it yet though... sounds like the bushings/bearings need lube).

no, but all of my radio stations have to be in chronilogical order or I get pissed. I used to even change them in the work truck...

Also 4x4junkie, how do you check your started motor? I will be doing some maintence this weekend so I would like to check this out if I can.

Thanks.

I've seen somehitng similar to that on my 2.9....

Not sure if it can be checked without actually removing it (maybe put a screwdriver against it and your ear to see if it's what's making the noise).

Motors like that usually come apart pretty easy, try putting some lithium wheelbearing grease on the gears and bushings in there (make sure you don't damage the motor brushes when reassembling it)
