Hi all I'm new here as this is my first post...one question! I have a 99 ranger 4x4 with a whining rear end. (8.8/4-10) Last weekend was the pull-athon at the local junk yard. all you can carry $80.00. I found a (7.5/410) I realise the 8.8 is a tougher rear with larger brakes. This will be a daily driver no horseing around LOL. I know the 4-10 gear will work but will the ring size change everything? Thanks fellas planning on doing the swap this weekend. I just dont want to be wrong right out of the gates. Thanks!

i hope its the rear end that is whining.

did you pull the rear shaft and drive it in 4x4 on the front wheels or was it obvious the rear is bad after inspection?

the tone rings are the same ppm as i recall so you should be ok there. theres some other variance in later years.

I didn't pull the driveshaft...its pretty obvious the noise is coming from the rear end. I suppose the sound could be the wheel bearings. But with windows down it is screaming the rear end. I'm planning on pulling the pumpkin cover before removal on Sat. I have to pull the bed anyway to replace the spring hangers.

ahhhhh.....one of those while i am at it scenarios....

it will be a full weekend of making up new swear words:icon_thumby:

Your new 7.5" rear may still have the 10" brakes. Brake size is determined by gross weight only.

unbolt the whole brake assembly (backing plates and all) from your old 8.8 (provided its a ranger 8.8) and swap them to the 7.5 rear.

The consensus is that the 7.5 will be fine to run in place of the 8.8 both being 4.10 gears. Correct? I just don't want any interference with the transfercase and rearend. Good idea... swapping the brakes. I'd like to think I would have thought of that when I was elbow deep into the swap..LOL!

If you don't get to swapping the brakes, just take the backing plates and drums off and set them aside, if you have to return a core they probably won't care if it doesn't have brakes on it
