Why exactly can't you reuse the big nut on the output shaft and the 32mm nut on the counter shaft?

As long as the notch doesnt line up with groove again does it matter?

I ask because when I pulled my trashed tranny apart (that the PO had rebuilt 1000 miles ago) I could tell the nuts had been reused because I could see where nut had been dimpled into the groove before.

I reuse them and have not had any problems to date.

Everywhere I have read so far says that they can't be reused, but I dont see why not. Unless they are like the head bolts on my 2.3 that can only be used once because they stretch when they have the correct torque put on them.

Ford requires that the nuts in question be replaced under warranty as a durability issue. Re dimpling the nuts weakens the nut. But Ford also requires that ALL suspension bolts be replaced once removed and who does that?

im about to do the same thing.... swap the gears. but i got a 3.0 with 7 inches of lift with 33s........ is there a big differnce??

Mike add a little more insite to your question........I'm not understanding you?

this is just my guess.... changing the gears in the transmission to 4 cylinder gears? they are all a lower gear ratio

The staking collar has no effect on the stength of the nut.

I re-use those nuts all the time, I just make sure that I use a nut froma different trans so the staking point doesn't line up.

Frankly, those staking grooves won't keep an under tightened nut in place.
And if the nut is properly tightened it isn't going anywhere.
