On my way to the hunk yard. The dont have an 88 ranger like mine. But what do I need to look for with getting an alternator? What other years will work? Do I just need to worry about amps? Will aerostar work from around the same year? Same as explore because they have the same engine? Also terminal cords? can i grab other years of same model? Or same years as other models? any info would be great. Thanks guys.

They can be all different. Some have different clock positions where the cable goes, some have different mounting, different pulley and different amps, even on the same engine.

On an alternator it is best to get the right one for your truck.

What engine?

Looks like an '88 would have serpentine belt but no tensioner so alternator is the tensioner, which is different than '90s models.

Just take the old alternator with you for fit.

^^ Take the one you have to the jy and match it...not just the wiring but carefully match the electrical connections...

If it was a 2.3 engine, the Mustang alternators look exactly the same...but they are actually reversed as to installation so they will not work without changing the whole bracket out...the electrical connections are the same but also reversed...yours may work but it may also stretch the wires too much.

I think the alternator from a 5.0 from this era also worked but the brackets are not the same...

Do not let go of your dead part until you have a known good part installed.
