is 16.5v too much for an alternator to be putting out??

ive always heard 13 to 14v is normal. never heard of more than that.

16v does sound high though.

yeah thats what sparked me to ask. the battery isnt holding charge, and before i put it in that truck it was 100% fine. i can remove the ground terminal and the truck stays running. so im wondering if the high voltage killed my battery??:icon_confused:

It's more than possible. I've seen over-charging alternators shred good batteries before. I've also seen under-charged batteries burn up alternators. I'd just replace both in your case.

that cost money:bawling::bawling::icon_twisted:

Note never bisconnect the battery when the engine is running even a few seconts can destroy the alternator or regulator that is old school don`t do it. Use the procedure it the charging system to check for faults.
