Keeping the 3.73s would be fine. 31"(aka 265/75R15) is a stock tire size that is offered with 3.73 gears.

Definitely bolt the hubs on, and the t-case will bolt up. The shift boots will cost a bit more than you would like to think...

Don't bother swapping the engine, they are damn near the same. No power increase, but I'm pretty sure the 91 has the heads that are prone to cracking, which the 94 doesn't. Keep the heads for when/if yours go bad.

I am sure they never offered 265's on a ranger except for the newer special ones like the FX4 and the... wait I think thats the only one. But the biggest they ever went was 255's on all the rest I believe. and they only offered it in 4.10 L/S rear end.

But 31's will be fine I push 31's with my 3.0L and 3.73's just fine...

+1 on the 3.73s. If you hafta go up, anything over 4.10s would be overkill. Save the money cause you know in the future you're gonna want to put bigger tires on it, then you will need lower gears. I run 4.56s with my 35s. 4.88s would probably be better but I got a helluva deal on my gears so that's what I went with.

Don't know much about the 4Ls. I've had 4 different 92s and haven't had a single problem with any of them, short of the lower intake leak they all develop.

4.0's are great engines, easy to work on, I've only had one for a year and the power is perfect, I swapped from 3.55's to 3.73's on the sploder and they're a bit low for the 235's on it, 31's would be perfect. which is odd since my 2.3 turbo ranger wants 4.56's with the 31's but it's a completely different power curve...

original_ranger84 they did offer 265/75/15 on other rangers than the newer fx4 my 94 came with axle code r6 l\s 3.73 and tire size 265/75/15 i was surprised when i looked at it and that is what it said

I have been watching this black perfect condition Ranger. So I looked and I want it for 1,500 for my range that's good. Anyhow it's a no rust, dent free, black Ranger. It's short bed, standard cab, 4L, 5spd, 4wd with grey interior. It runs perfect with a slight engine lifter tick and transmission and clutch is good also. It's got the push button and auto hubs 4wd. Which does work.

I am planning to change the setup since it's stock and already has new 31" mudders on it. I am planning on putting on a skyjacker stage 2 4" lift. Since I am staying with 31's what gear size would be good with the 4L and 31's??? The gears now are 3:73.

3.73's would be fine, but 4.10's might work well with 31's

I can say from experience that witha 4.0 4.10's are too much
with 235/75-15 tires.

I have the manual transfer case and warn hubs that I took off my old friend's 94 Explorer last year. I want to change the hubs at least. The manual case came off a auto tranny. Will this case fit on to a 5spd or no???

there is only ONE T-case 1991-up,
there is only ONE shifter for it. that T-case shifter
fits all '88 up transmissions

I have read that the rollercam came into the 92 4L's just like the 92+ 3L's. Even though the 91 engine runs good. He still has the explorer and the 94 4L has less miles and top end was redone last year, valve job, new gaskets, etc.

ALL 4.0's are roller cam

Is the internal parts the same on the 91 4L's and 94 4L's??? If not would there be an advantage of putting in the 94 4L into the 91???

The 1993-94 heads are more resistant to cracking, but other
than that you'd want to install that 1994 engine with your
upper intake on engine harness and injectors.

1994's are "SEFI" which is different (different doesn't equal better)
and the Cam position sensor and pressure feedback sensor for the
EGR system are both problem areas.

Sorry for the long post I wanted to try and keep in one section instead of spreading out and making multiple threads. To me that's a waste. I did not own a 4L much to learn about...I am more a 3L and 5L person. Educate me on this if you would.

if you ever live with a 4.0 long term you'll quickly come to believe
that you don't need a V8

Allan...!?

What's this about a cam sensor? I never heard nothing about cam sensor differences.

Does it apply to my engine swap? (if you forgot, 94Cali to 93Fed)

Must have been a special order truck cause I have never seen that. Especially since they only put 3.73's with the 31's... in the new ones I believe you can only get the 4.10's with 31's

Dude, it's a factory option. Not special order, not dealer option, factory.

It's even listed in my 94 owners manual. And it's not too uncommon.

Well in all of my time I have never seen a 90's ranger with factory 31's so thats just what I'm basing it off of. Geez. Maybe you have it but out of the hunderds of rangers I seen up here only the fx4's had them stock.
