I have my 86 b2 with a 2.9 with the a4dl. I am swapping in a 4.0 out of a 97 ranger and a c5 out of an 84 b2. I do not have the dipstick tube nor the dipstick for the c5. Will mine from the a4dl be compatible? Also I have read around that you either need to space the 4.0 flywheel in order to be the correct fit for the c5 or you can use the 2.9 flywheel? Not sure what one would work or be better. Any help would be great.

Why a c5?
Why not get an a4ld or fix the one you have?

The motor and trans have 335,000 on them and are showing the it heavily. I have already had it rebuilt the trans about 10,000 miles ago and recently I have lost reverse and overdrive. Im just freshing it up with a whole new drivetrain. I've heard the c5 is conciderably stronger ( since it is commonly used behind v8's) and less problematic

IIRC the dipsticks are different.

I used an aftermarket case fill C4 Lokar one. It looks nice, is hard to read on a good day and impossible to read right after you add fluid but it plugs the hole and if you work at it you can check the fluid level.

Dunno about the 2.9 to 4.0 stuff aside from that you are going to need a computer for a manual truck. I am not really for sure how a stock V6 C5 will like a 4.0 either.

The transfer case linkages are also completly different if you have a manual t-case. If it is possible I would try to use the t-case that was with the trans for that little lever.

The 4.0 was pulled from a manual ranger and I have the computer so I am good there. I am having my buddy who owns dougs performance transmission beef up the tranny. New torque converter, servos, manual valve body, ect. I have already made custom linkage for the t case. Will any c4 dipstick and tube be compatible?

It should be as long as it is case fill.
