Hello all,
Due to a rod knock, I need to replace the engine in my 2000 Ranger. I have located a 4.0 engine with only 28,000 miles on it, but it has EGR, and mine doesn't. Is that a big deal to swap? The guy at the salvage yard seemed to think so.
Thanks, RickD

What year motor are you looking at swapping in?

If you get the motor, EGR components like the exhaust tube/exhaust manifold, engine harness, and computer all in one shot, you might be fine with doing the swap. There are definite differences in the computers of a motor with EGR and without.

Nothing is impossible to swap- just make sure you get everything you need from the donor to swap into your vehicle. EGR is all contained with the motor, nothing really to do with the trans or any other part of the vehicle, so if you have all of tab A to insert into slot B it should work!

if you use your intake, sensors ,harness, exhaust manifolds, basically, all of your parts, you can swap it in. the block is the same as long as it is the same "series" engine.
its listed in the tech library as to when ford made changes in the engines.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking. My truck is a 2000 4.0 Sport with vin X, auto, 4wd. it does not have an EGR system.
This is what they told me about the engines that are available with low miles:
#1. 1999 Ranger 4.0 vin X with EGR and std. emissions- 23,000 miles
RDY, W-EGR, XLT, 11-98, 4.0L AT, RWD
#2 1999 Ranger 4.0 vin X with EGR and std. emissions- 50,000 miles
MIA, W, VLD, BRK, 324, 4.0l, OMF1, AOD, 4WD
So I was hoping the EGR just affects the intake and exhaust manifolds, and the heads are the same. Does anyone have an engine with EGR that could check and see if the EGR system goes into the heads?
Thanks, Rick
