I have the 4 speed in my 85 ranger and i was wondering if a 5 speed from an 86 would fit right in or if i would need an adapter or maybe the bell housings will just swap out??

If it has a 2.9L engine, it should fit your 2.8L no problem. Not sure on other issues like if the clutch hydraulics or t-case shifter linkage are different, though everything from the donor should be swappable if so (hopefully it's not an e-shift case).
IIRC, the 5-speed is longer than the 4-sp, so you'll also need new driveshafts. If the donor truck is the same cab/bed as yours, you're all set (if not, the front shaft can still be used, but not it's rear).
