Your '97 is pre-PATS to the best of my memory.
On the newer truck - only having one key is recoverable. You just can't do it the simple way. I originally only had one key for my '99 and was able to use Forscan to delete all the existing keys out and introduce the original plus a new PATS key that way. Went through the same procedure during the engine swap so I could use my Ranger keys with the Explorer's ECM and PATS module.
