My credo
The perfect is the enemy of the good.
So I stupidly left fob for XLT in pocket and it went thru washing machine with clothes. But it works. I thought maybe I'd put it with some rice to really dry out. How do you get it open I don't see any marks on it, do you just pry it apart?

I figure I lucked out it didn't wreck it. I'm not normally like that. Good lesson I suppose. I've had Bic lighters jam in between the washer drum and the agitator and stop it, that can burn up a belt. I think what happens is it gets hot then an interlock kicks in. Maybe.

Unrelated, but interesting, I stopped by O'Reilly new store to make sure they'd take cores from online order, yes, and, they have a big sign "we turn drums and rotos" so that's unusual I don't know of anyone else who does it around here.

If its working i wouldnt worry about it

cool, thanks. I guess if moisture could get in, it can get out.
just was thinking, this would probably be hard to get a replacement and it'd have to be programmed.
I do have the second fob, came with it, but I never like having just one key.
And a bad fob doesn't stop you from opening/starting the truck in worst case like if your fob battery ran out.
I like the programming - one push, driver side only, second push, passenger side. If it's already locked, a second push on lock beeps horn.

and it's 80 and sunny here, so it's probably dry already, if it even actually got wet inside, seems like it would. A credit to the part, that it seemed to not cause an issue.

If it's the type like I have, they're dirt cheap to replace. I think they were $10-15 for a two pack? As far as opening them up - if you take them off the key ring, it should split open where the two halves join there. At least that's how I remember it - don't have the truck keys on me at the moment.

That may not work on your '97. Looks like there are similar options though.

Thanks for the correct link for earlier fobs.

personally I would just dry it out and possibly change the batteries. you should be good. Fastpakr's instructions on how to open them up is spot on. . Had my Buick fob go through the washer, and it stopped working a few days later because the moisture killed the battery. new battery, dried the electronics off and good to go for over 2 years now.

OK sounds great. So far no problems, but changing out the battery woul be a really good idea. The ones posted latest, that's just like mine.
So I don't think I need one but sure is nice to know they are there. Hopefully will remain available a while.
If I ever had to get another, they'd have to be mated though right?

"1. Turn ignition from Off to Run 5 times ending in Run ( Do not start the car, run position is before the vehicle will start )ending in Run. Must be performing within 10 seconds. Locks will cycle signaling entering into programming mode. Keep foot off brake pedal.

2. Press any button on the remote being programmed, locks cycle confirming programming. Repeat this step for any addition remotes.

3. Turn key to off, locks will cycle to end programming mode."

Stolen from a key company website.

Well that sounds pretty easy!! Thanks. Doesn't require trip to locksmith. But if you get the actual key itself I suspect then, that's different, it'd have to be programmed (I think). Because the PATS stuff is in the key. If I have PATS, I think I do...

PATS is a different process for sure. If you currently have two working PATS keys, now is the time to get a third and set it aside somewhere. The DIY programming process requires two keys, otherwise you're taking a trip to a locksmith or learning to use Forscan. I'm not sure who will cut a PATS key for you locally without treating it like a whole process though. In the past, you could take a blank PATS key over to Hixson in Salem and they'd just to a traditional key copy and let you do the programming itself. But they closed a while ago. Maybe B&D?

Oh man I thought you just had to have the one "original" key. That's a different story altogether. I got PATS keys from B&D lock for the Mazda I had only one key for it. I actually had them just cut the keys and I bolluxed up the programming of it to the point the truck was like, I'm not doing anything, now. But the guy programmed them in no problem (and no charge - but he should have, really). I just was kind of rushing it and he was like this is old PATS they are not known for speed.

It does work you just have to follow the instructions. Not sure of procedure for '97.

Will definitely put this on my shopping list to get one more for the Ranger. If they have the blanks, or can get them. I mean, I don't even know for sure '97 is PATS but I'm guessing it is.
