Got a 86 Ranger with a 2.9 this has a knock sensor which is broken off and is an unobtainable part can I use any 2 wire knock sensor to replace this and wire it in with an appropriate connector ? Another words are all 2 wire knock sensors basically the same Thanks in advance

No.

And yes.

Frequency is key.

Why does a 2.9 even need a knock sensor? Aren't they sub 9:1 compression engines? :icon_confused:

It’s to listen for death knocking at the door.

They have agressive timing curves and lean when possible to maximize power and emissions for the time...and shit fuel is everywhere.....for the 80,s.

Ford actually dropped the knock sensors on the 2.9 because they would pick up normal valve train noises and pull timing.

I was actually just about to make a joke about 2.9s making so many noises the knock sensor probably gets very confused...

That being true just makes it that much more hilarious.

How else would you know when to change the cam bearings?

The 86 2.9 does have a knock sensor, it's on pin 23 of the computer. Maybe they did away with it later?

86 was the first year the 2.9 was put in a ranger...
