Question for '06-'08 FX4 owners with 5spd auto and stock gearing

I was just wondering, when driving at 70mph, what RPM are you at? With my '07 FX4 with a 5 spd automatic, I'm at 2500, and it seems really high for being a 5 spd auto. Our 2005 Explorer is at 2000 RPM @ 70 MPH with the same 4.0 and 5 spd auto. I realize the gearing can explain part of it, but it doesn't seem like I can hear 5 gear changes in my Ranger like I can in our Explorer. Is it possible a 4 spd auto was somehow put in, even though my window sticker reprint clearly states it has a 5 spd?

I realize it's a truck, and noise and poor MPG are part of owning a truck, but it just seems like too much engine noise due to the RPMs, and the higher RPMs, if higher than they should be, would obviously be hurting my MPG as well. Again, I'm not whining about buying a truck and complaining that's it's not quiet inside and doesn't get good MPG. Just wondering if what I'm experiencing is normal.

It's a 5 speed auto. They don't offer any other automatic in that year with the 4.0 V6. Also, 2500 is perfect for cruising at that speed. Perfectly normal.

+1. I don't have an FX4, I have a Sport, but it's almost the same. I run right at 2500 rpm at 70 mph too. And I've counted the number of shifts, and all 5 gears and torque converter lock-up is all working perfect.

FX4 have 4.10 gears while most other Rangers have 3.73 unless special ordered or 4 cyl. 2500 rpm at 70 mph is spot on normal.

Ok. Thanks for all the input guys. Just seemed a little off to me. But if you say it's normal, then I'll just stop thinking about it.
