Hello everyone. I'm teleworking and have a lot of time on my hands. My family is driving me nuts, so I decided to pick up a project vehicle. So I recently bought up a $500 1999 Ranger XLT 2WD 3.0L. Overall the truck is pretty rough and engine was shot. I picked up a 3.0L from a wrecked 2007 Ranger at the Junkyard for $325 with all the accessories and an a 13 month warranty. Looking forward to chewing through this engine swap. I've done lots of smaller projects through the years, but this is my first engine change.

I've already found this forum to be very helpful. Wish me luck as I tackle this project!

Hopefully they left all the wire harness intact so the swap will be quicker. Double check all the connections from the original harness to the harness on the replacement engine. Since the years are close and it's the same engine, chances are good everything is the same but better to be safe than sorry. Assuming the truck is an automatic like the replacement engine is setup for.

Yes, I did get the whole wiring harness and noticed that several of the connections are different from my old motor. So I swapped the upper / lower intake manifolds, valve covers and the whole accessory package from my old motor and put it on the "new" motor. That way it should all plug up nicely...I hope!

Both trucks are automatics.

Good luck with the project. I'm doing the same thing on a small scale. Bored with the 'stay at home' I towed a 94 home. So far just some electrics, heater core, radio and a lot of small stuff related to truck sitting for some time.

Update:

I'm pleased to report that I've got the "new" motor in the Ranger and got it running. Also cleaned it up nicely and painted it satin black. Replaced the nasty yellow headlights with some clear ones. She's looking sweet now!

Thanks to everyone on this forum who helped me along the way. I wrestled with mating the transmission to the engine and also had a bad vacuum leak that was hard to diagnose. I wouldn't have been able to figure it out with all the help I've gotten here.

Having a minor issue with a cylinder #5 misfire, but I'm working it now. Feel free to follow my progress on this thread if you like. Thanks again!

Sharp looking truck ☝

I like it. And I don't like anything...

Btw what the heck kind of dog is that?

Thanks!

That’s Roger. He’s our Goldendoodle. Half golden retriever and half poodle. He’s a good boy!

I was tempted to get a labradoodle... but you never know which personality you get! Poodles are awful, labs and retrievers are awesome. I went with a sheperd.
