I really wish I could find a 2.3 4x4 trans but they are hard to find. I have a 1992 Ranger 2.3 4x4 with a 2wd 5spd Mazda trans. Today I found a Mazda B4000 (has 4.0L) 4x4 trans with the electric t-case included. I was woundering if I can use this 4.0 trans in my 2.3 after I swap all the guts inside. I hear the 4.0 trans is tougher inside than the 2.3 trans.

Also I don't know if the electric connecter on the t-case is the same. Any thoughts thanks.

What's wrong with your transfer case?

Only five bolts hold the t-case to the trans....

Using the internals of the 4.0 trans as a COMPLETE set it should work

You MAY have some shimming issues with final assembly, but you also might not...

I don't have a t-case. I bought the truck as is with no t-case only a 2wd transmission. I was just woundering if anyone has done this before as far as putting 4.0 guts into a 2.3 transmission before I go buy it. Thank you.

Anyone else have any thoughts? I'd like to here from someone who has done this before or if anyone has any parts. Thank you.

I've heard it will work from several guys! The trans are just about the same other than the bellhousing witch isnt detachable. I have pulled the top plate off a 2.3 and 4.0 and compared them and they look directly the same! The difference in the bellhousing is the starter mount location is on the opisite side.

I've pondered since this last post and I was thinking instead of trying to find a junk yard doner, why not rebuild what I have and just aquire the parts I need to make it a 4x4 trans?

If you have any idea where a guy can buy these parts or even a reputable trans shop in the DE, MD, PA, NJ area that would be awsome. I don't know how hard the M5OD is to rebuild. I have completely rebuilt a NV4500 out off my 98 Cummins and it's still running strong 47,000 miles ago. My thoughts were, if I'm going to turbo my Ranger I want to have a solid drivetrain. I don't plan on going over 200hp just a mild set up. Thank again.

The problem is that each of the two parts you need are about $300.

Collectively you can get them used, but you'll need someone willing to give up those two parts.

Frankly for my own part I'd sell you both, but you wouldn't like the price.

which is basically atleast half of what I get for a complete 4x4 transmisison.

Or to put it another way, $175 plus shipping, like I said, ugly
If I sell those parts I'm basically kissing off a later sale of a complete transmission

which parts are those AllanD? are they difficult to get out? I have access to shit-tons of 4.0 trans from cash 4 clunkers trade ins.

I'll ponder on it, that don't sound too bad from where I stand right now. Maybe you can also give me leads to doing a complete rebuild also; seals, forks, common wearing bearings, etc... My trans right now is pretty sloppy, it leaks, and I don't like the feel of it. Thanks

Lets talk about your later sale on your complete transmission, what do you want for one?

You can PM me with that information if you want, thank you.
