Is it necessary to drop the transmission on an Explorer to pull the engine for replacement?

Do you have any idea why the Haynes book says to pull the front drive axles? No, you can just pull the engine out and leave trans in vehicle
It will most likely be an automatic so MAKE SURE torque converter is unbolted from flexplate and pushed back into trans as far as it will go, before you start pulling engine out.
If torque converter becomes misaligned with front pump, i.e. it slides out a bit, and weight of engine pushes it back into trans then it can snap off front pump drive.
And you won't know it happened until everything is back together and you start up engine and put it in gear, and nothing happens...........no go in any gear, real bummer
Remember that the weight of the engine is what is holding the springs on the front of vehicle down, so as you raise the engine the body will raise with it, and you can run out of lift height on the cherry picker pretty fast, lol
You can chain the springs so they don't expand fully
