hey everyone well i got my project filthy ford ranger done an on the road but the PS wines like crazy. i was told to take the ps cap off with the truck running an turn the wheel full crank to each side a couple times then check the fluid top up if its low an keep doin that till the level is good?

like the truck has a 6" SJ lift an 33s an it does have the SJ drop pitman arm. could my PS pump be on its way out the door? or am i bleeding it wrong?

anything advice would be amazing thanks.

Power steering pumps are self bleeding simply by being used. So yes you are doing it right. If the fluid is the right level and you have moved the steering around. Then it should be bled.

Things to consider. have a friend swing the steering wheel around while you watch the fluid in the pump. you are watching for bubbles. if you are not seeing bubbles coming into the fluid then its bled. If you are seeing a continuous stream of bubbles then either is not bled or you are sucking in air somewhere.

BTW the bleeding process of these pumps is pretty quick usually less then 10 seconds.

sometimes if the fluid gets aerated and you have to let it sit for awhile the lift the front and cycle the steering back and forth several times with the engine off. it takes much longer to bleed if the bubbles are tiny from the pump running then if the bubbles are big. Most of the time you can start it up and it will just bleed but if you have alot of air it can take awhile for it to get the air out. Also if you still have a whine check if there is any restrictions in return lines. also check belt tension, then you can condemn the pump if all else is good.

alright ill do all that. ya like all the lines are brand new an i havnt looked to see if bubbles are coming out or not but il do that. also when i go to turn the first 1/4 turn is stiff an the rest is smooth turning, its just the pump wines brutally

Are you filling it up with power steering fluid or ATF? My pump whined like no other until I realized it acually neede ATF. Put some of ATF in there like Ford wants and a little trans stop-leak to swell the rack and it shut up quite a bit.

really ATF an tran stop leak? cuz ya im using prestone power steerin fluid. i never new you could use ATF for that. but what about now that its full of power steering fluid do i just add ATF to it or i have to drain it then put atf in?

the ps pumps in these trucks suck. I replaced my with an new one 2 years ago and it still whines. you can use atf or mercon III, I had to put some lucus stop leak in it becasue the rack was leaking a little. I put to much so I just used a turkey baster to suck some out and replace I did it a few times and now it is better. the lazy mans way to bleed these trucks is to go to a parking lot and do slow figures 8's.

Use a suction pump or turkey baster to suck out as much fluid as possible and refill with ATF. Repeat in another couple hundred miles, and once more in another couple hundred miles from there. I do this oince every oil change to keep the fluid fresh.

Never hurts to have a gatorback belt on either

It actually specifies ATF Type F up to 95, 96+ Mercon ATF...

The easiest way is to remove line, fluid will drain, reinstall line, fill with atf, repeat when necessary to flush system...

Or...if you wanna get it in one whole shot...

Remove line and point in drain pan, fluid will drain, install vacuum cap and clamp on reservoir return port, fill with atf, start engine and turn wheel while having someone continuously fill reservoir, repeat until clean atf begins draining out, stop engine, remove vacuum cap, install line and clamp, refill, and enjoy...

I had to replace a line before it was a pita for me . so i have a turkey baster that i paid $1.25 for an a clear hose that i attach to the tip of the baster i fish the hose into the filler tube as far down as i can. then i suck the atf out and disconnect the baster from the tube empty connect again until it is empty takes about 3 min. for what it is worth there is a guru on another site that claims mercon for all years but i have a 99 and use mercon. drive it for a shile and do it again until it is clean.

alright well ill try an bleed the system a lil more then if that doesnt wrk ill try the atf method thanks everyone.

Another thing........Ford could never build a PS pump, is this going to make me switch to manual steering, hell no. My dads blew a line off and all the fluid came out. Well after fixing it and filling it up it still whined. Well after driving it for sometime it became quieter over time and back to the way it was, mine was the same way when I got one from the JY and who knows how long it sat there without fluid in it.

whenever i need to bleed a ps pump or i have drained all the fluid out, I fill it to the full mark and either pull a fuse or unhook the coil and crank the engine over to prime the pump. after the fluid goes down and into all the hoses and gear box i stop cranking the engine and top off the resivour. Never had a problem doing it that way. Idk why everyone dislikes ford pumps, except for the ford whine they make, they make that whining noise because ford uses a slipper type pump and everyone else in the world uses vein type pumps. I say all hail the noisy pumps and if you dont like it, dont buy a ford. lol
