proud owner 85 ranger 4x4

just got an 85 ranger and gonna start fixin'er up. problem is i ain't gettin gas in my carb. it'll run if i prime the carb. i don't hear the fuel pump kick on, not sure if there is something i could check out before just assuming its bad and replacing it.
