Programmers for 3.0

Any tuner purchased from a retailer like that is going to give you a generic, canned, one-size fits-all tune. You may see gains, you may not. I've even seen dyno charts in the past where a guy's hp and tq numbers dropped after using the JET programmer.
What you really need to do is find a local SCT or superchips tuner that can write custom tunes for your truck with your mods. That's the only way to get the full potential out of the tuner/programmer. Anything else, is pretty much a waste of money imo.

Yeah i have heard bad things about the JET programmer so that one I wouldnt get.. but i checked out the Superchips cortex and they make one for 4.0/3.0L 99-01 Ford Ranger so would that one still be considered "generic one-size fits all"?

It's the difference between buying an off the rack suit and buying a tailored suit. Ask yourself this: If it has parameters for 2 completely different engines, how tailored can it be to your truck? What happens if you have an air intake, headers, and exhaust? Does it magically have the knowledge and capabilities to know how to correct the fuel/timing tables? No!
It's going to come with some base mapping that will provide some gain on MOST engines. It's far from the optimal setup. Especially if you have other engine mods. A tuner with custom tunes is only like $20 more than the ones you're looking at. Why wouldn't you just spend the extra money, and get the most performance for your $$$?
It makes the most sense to wait, and save the tuner for last though. IF you buy a tuner now with custom tunes, then add more mods, you'll need to get it retuned for the added mods, and that's going to cost more money. Just get all of your other mods done, then buy the tuner with custom tunes. It will give you the most performance for your money, and you'll only have to pay for tunes once, instead of multiple times.

Good point man thanks, I have 2 mods I want to do so I'll wait till they are done mean while I'll look for a place near by that can make me a customs tuner... Or do u know of any place online?

SCT's are pretty highly regarded in the Ford community. Visit their website sctflash.com, click on the "find a dealer" tab near the top, and enter your zip code. It will come up with a list of all the SCT tuners in your area. Call around, and tell them what you've got, and what you want. Some guys may not want to try and tune your truck, others will be able to handle it no problem.:icon_thumby:
