I have a 1988 Ranger xlt 4x4 with the 2.9l and i am having a problem with it not starting. have narrowed it down that its not getting any fuel to the engine. i thought that it might be the fuel pump that is mounted externally so i got a new one and installed it and nothing changed. i took the old fuel pump and tested it and it works fine. so now I'm thinking that somehow it is not getting any power to the fuel pump. if anybody has any idea what might be wrong or something for me to try it would be very appreciated.

im thinkin you mean 1988? anywho, when you turn the key to the run position, do you hear any thing? like pumps wherring? if not, check the pump relay/fuse's first befor replacing parts.

Pretty sure the 1988 trucks had two fuel pumps. A low pressure in the tank, and a high pressure on the driver side frame rail.

There is a valve on the fuel rail (looks like a valve stem) your best bet would be get a fuel pressure guage and attach it to the port and see what you get with the key on, and if it does show at least 40PSI, if it stays there for a while when the key is turned back off.

finally found out that it was the inertia switch. right now i have a wire going from one side of the connector to the other untill i can get a new one. anybody have a idea how much one is and where i can get one?

Almost certain that the inertia switch is a ford only item...so youcan order a new one from any dealership....or start phoning around to your local salvage yards and maybe pick up a used one and hope it works.
