First big snow this week and tried to back out of drive way and the 4WD wouldn't engage when I pushed the button....had to drive it around the back of the house through the yard to get out to go to work. Then on the way to work the light was very dim but still no 4WD. Could it be the module or maybe when we put an oil pan on , we jacked the motor and tranny up all the way , could a wire be disconnected or something? It worked before when I tried it....any solutions?

Yes there was clicking, and it is manual transmission.
anyone else have any suggestions?? Have to go out in the snow to work on it and its getting dark.....dread looking for the shift motor with snow and ice all over the underside, but thank you for the tip!!!

i had the dim light thing happening to my 94, i would unplug the switch and it would be good for a while, then it would act up again. i replaced the switch and the problem was resolved. it sounds ike you have more of a problem, but i would try the switch first.

The 4wd motor is on the side of the transfer case. Disconnect the wiring harness connector down there, clean out any corrosion, reconnect. If the truck hasn't been put into 4x4 for a long time, the motor itself may be corroded. I took one apart on my '94, cleaned it up (evidence of water getting in there) and reassembled. No problems since and that was around 200,000 miles ago.
