problems with 2.9

1988 ford ranger 2.9l automatic.Ok i have three problems.first and biggest problem is when it idles it runs fine put it in gear and the rpms drop and sometimes stalls this happens in every gear except neutral and parkcould this be the tourque converter?.second problem is when i rev it up it puts out black smoke could this be a clogged cadalliac converter?.and third is when its running it is running rich.And i ran the codes and it didnt have any at all.please help

It is hard to tell from GUNNING the engine and seeing that black smoke if it is rich or not.. Ya see when we GUN the engine the fuel system automatically makes the mixture rich! IT IS SUPPOSED to smoke when we do that. So only running down the hiway at them same rpm will tell you if the mixture is smoking rich or not..

have u changed the plugs and wires? mine did for awhile then i changed them and it hasnt since . that might also help with it running rich id also try sum fuel clearner when u fill it up next

black smoke comes out when starting it.and after i turn it off after i get done driving it you can smell the smell of rich gas.i dont rev it when i drive it but it rich cause you can smell it if you have the windows down at a stop sign or stop light.

what did your truck do for while?and i havent changed the wires but ive replaced the plugsit idles fine just in gear i have problems thats why i think maybe tourque converter
