Problem?

I went mudding the other day and noticed something that is a problem. When I have 4wd on my truck makes a clunking noise when going over about 30mph. I don't know what it is though. I had this problem in the winter and I found that the chain in the transfer case was extremely loose. I have since replaced the chain and gear in the transfer case. Only problem is that I have never really used 4wd after I fixed it until I went mudding the other day. So now I am thinking its the transmission but I am not 100% sure. My dad said that the U-Joints are bad and that is making the noise. Could that be the problem? I only ask because he has never heard the noise himself and it actually feels like the truck is hiccuping when it happens. If anyone knows what it could be or if it could be the U-Joints that make it do that? Oh, and I think that when it hiccups that it disengages 4wd, but again I'm not 100%.
Thanks for any help

Could be U joints, there cheap and faily easy to replace. Since your truck is IFS front there are one each end of the front drive shaft, but the ones i would look at first are on the rear if you have a suber cab there is three, and if you have a reg cab there may be a double cardian(sp) If they are stil using them. Block the tires and with the truck in nuetral go under and hold oth sides of the u joints and check fo any play or clunking sounds.

Okay, thanks for the help. If you have any other ideas please post. And it is a single/reg cab. I don't know what you were talking about when you mentioned the reg/ext cab? What is special about the u joints?

The extended cabs a 2 piece drive shaft with three u joints on it and a carrier bearng on one shaft, doesnt apply to you if you have a reg cab. A double cardian wold be on the transmission end and it sort of looks like 2 u joints in a big cast steel cage, but I dont know if they used them in the newer trucks

Okay, it is not the U-Joints. It is in the front diff though. There is alot of "play" in it and it isn't the u-joints so I am figuring its probably the ring gear? Any other thoughts? And if I replace it I might just put a locker in the front. If I do that does anyone have any suggestions on what kind to put in?:dunno:
