problem with idle

I have a 92 ranger well 89 motor. its a 2.3. When the motors cold and you start it it revs up like normal but then quickly drops to below a grand. then when the motors hot and you put it in neutral it revs up to 2 grand. the engine light is on and cant figure it out. any help would be appreciated thanks.

go HERE and pull the trouble codes, see what the computer thinks is wrong, it'll be the most telling as to what is actually wrong.

Plus 1 get a code reader they are cheap, easy to use, and worth every penny they will save you a lot of trouble.

I just use a little strip of metal, put it across the two pins on the diagnostic connectors then sit in the cab and count the CEL flashes, it's really not all that hard to understand, I have a code reader but haven't even used it yet...
