Problem with hub

So I had my hub apart to replace a bad grease seal, and I'm having some problems getting it back together.

Where the axle shafts sticks out past the spindle, there is a bearing and two washers that are held on by a snap ring. The snap ring sits in a groove in the splines in the shaft. Well, there isn't enough room to get the snap ring in.

ALso, the axle won't budge. I am completely baffled as to what is going on here. How is this possible? The spindle didn't move, and it's not like the axle shot back into the housing when I took the snap ring off.

Any solutions?

Take a long screwdriver by the u-joint in the axle shaft and use it to pry the axle shaft outwards. You should have enough room for the snap ring then

Sweet that worked great. Thanks.
