im having a problem with my b2, when its cold the engine barely runs...sounds like its running on 1 cylinder. after it chugs away for a minute or two it will straighten out and run great...only when its cold does this show up...i replaced the ECT sensor and still no change. the temp gauge is also not working. the temp gauge runs off the temp sensor not the ECT right??seemed to start this after i changed my valve cover gaskets??

Have you double checked vacuum lines? It the only thing I can think of..

There are two hard plastic lines that go to a thing on the passenger fenderwell.it makes an odd noise when the motor is running bad....anyone know what it is?

Picture?? There is a lot of stuff going to the fender well.

Yes, there are two coolant temp readers
ECT is for the computer only, it has two wires
Temp sender is for the gauge only, it has one wire.

'86 should have a MAP sensor, it is on the firewall usually hidden behind wiring harness.
It will have 1 vacuum line and a 2 or 3 wire connector, is it small just a few inches square.
Check to make sure the vacuum line is good, not cracked or hardened.
You make have dislodged the line when doing the valve covers.

PCV Valve and Vent hose are on the valve covers, make sure those got hooked up correctly.

Canister on rad support or fender well could be part of EVAP system, it may make a vacuum type noise as engine stumbles, and could be part of the problem if EVAP solenoid is stuck open, so it is a vacuum leak of sorts

thanks! im going out to check a few things...when this first started happening, i replaced the ect sensor, fixed one of the hard vacuum lines going to that thing on the fenderwell and fixed a broken egr connector on one of the valve covers...

this is the vacuum thing i was talking about that makes the weird noise...also makes a buzzing noise after i shut it off sometimes. ..

mine was doing that same thing. i have an 86 b2. i just blocked the egr and disconnected those hard plastic lines. i unplugged that dodad too. from what i feel it didnt change anything on the motor or how it runs.

ford was having such a problem with the egr and knock sensor. they just deleted both from the system in 88 and up. lmao im still trying to locate a 88 and up computer for mine. that way i can just remove both components.

im not sure of a fix if your wanting to keep it original, but you can get one from a jy or buy new. make sure your egr is cleaned of carbon and the port.

good luck
