I started having problems shifting into 5th and reverse. I could force it into 5th but I don't. Reverse usually works but it feels like it is barely going in. Sometimes it grinds going into reverse. The tranny was used but everything else was new, flywheel, clutch, throwout and master.

This is a conversion to an M50 from a A4LD. It worked good for over a year but was always a little notchy going into all gears. I'm wondering if I have a clutch problem, a worn end on my shifter or synchro problems?

Has anybody on here ever run into this problem?

Sounds to me like it is not releasing fully. I had this problem until I put a new (pre-bled and pre-filled) clutch master cylinder in. Is there air in the clutch system?
Have someone operate the clutch pedal while you observe the slave cylinder response. That could point you in the right direction.

DOH! just noticed that all parts are new. Still check for air in the system.

I would check the adjustment for 5th and reverse on the side of the tranny. It's a big nut with a shaft you can adjust moving the fulcrum on a lever in there make sure nothing is loose.Another thing I would try is take out the shifter and see if that rail for 5th R is loose looking for a loose fork or something.I think there is some thing to not going in all the way but you can change the synchro by taking just the back of the tranny apart.
